As more sand accumulates in the lower chamber of an hourglass it forms a well structured pyramid, but tension builds within the system... What appears to be a cohesive mass at first sight, holding together against gravity will undeniably collapse. When the pile reaches its critical point a sudden shift appears from being locked in place to cascading downwards. This creates ripples and waves before settling back into another temporary formation.
