Description

Ashura is an Islamic mourning ceremony that occurs on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar. For Muslims, Ashura marks the day on which the Battle of Karbala took place, resulting in the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and a member of the Household of Muhammad.

Furthermore, for Muslims,it marks the day in which the prophet Moses was saved by God when he parted the sea while leading the children of Israel to the land of Israel.

The two main practices performed on the day are fasting and mourning.

This photo is related to the Ashura mourning ceremony in one of the cities of Iran called Bijar.
On this day, which is the day of the martyrdom of the third Imam of the Shiites. Early in the morning, people dip all their clothes and faces in mud as a sign of mourning, and then, by making fires at the same time, they dry themselves and mourn in the same way during the day.
