He crossed paths with the Countess at the bar of Moscow’s Cafe Kusochki, where they both happened to be reading Seneca, while a waitress in a police-woman’s outfit served them coffee. The Countess’ copy of Letters from a Stoic was, of course, hidden by her worn copy of 50 Shades of Grey.
