ESPADAS is a series of abstract paintings with the hyperreal atmosphere of digital media. Using familiar tools (MS Paint, Photoshop) with the intention of creating unexpected imagery, observations become distorted and reorganized to reflect new possibilities in digital image-making; investigating the intersection of these new “materials” on the artistic practice.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with reading picture books of flowers and collecting Kirakira (something twinkles). 
 
This collection includes 10 images and one complete image. The flowers are randomly selected from my favorites since I was a kid and familiar from daily life. The images represent flowers and jewels, which are inspired by each flower.
 
Every flower has a symbolistic meaning. Language of flowers makes them extraordinary and gives us a wonderful little discovery.

STORM is a series of 28 animations that draws inspiration from the winter storms of the Pacific North West. Using a digital moiré technique, each animation interprets atmospheric forces (rain, wind, ice & snow) as kinetic, pixelated abstractions. As with much of my work, STORM is focused on expressing notions of landscape through patterns. Each work translates impressions of atmospheric elements using a minimal visual language and a 6-tone greyscale palette.

CLIP knows who I am, so I trained a custom neural network to visualize what CLIP believes me to be. 

This system and others were prompted with a variety of inputs; art, shapes, and Perlin noise, and invited to produce a portrait of “Holly Herndon”.

Far from automated, this was a conversation between me and an AI; I hope to know as much about it as it knows about me <3
