Bruce Gilden

After I saw an exhibition at MOMA on New Japanese Photography in the Seventies, I felt that I could do some good work in Japan but it took 20 years for me to get to Tokyo (and Osaka). Even if a lot had changed, I was immediately struck by the intensity hidden behind the masks of traditions and the apparent order of Japanese society. I think my work in Japan presents the unknown face of the large city and reveals how violence and hardship weave through many aspects of daily existence.
