Shiva is known as "The Destroyer" within the Trimurti, the holy trinity that includes Brahma("The creator") & Vishnu("The Protector"). He destroys the universe in order to re-create it. This destruction is not arbitrary, but constructive. He represents the most essential goodness, yet is the destroyer of all. He is male & yet half female. He is peaceful, yet with the literal blink of his 3rd eye he can destroy the universe.
