Description

Shogun was a military title, used in the period of feudal Japan, granted directly by the Emperor to the general who commanded the army.

During Japan's history there have been three Shogunate governments, with the first established in 1192 by Minamoto no Yoritomo, known as the "Kamakura Shogunate".

This government was controlled by only three members of the Minamoto clan, as power had been usurped by the Hōjō clan, who, under the title of regents, appointed children and young people to Shoguns, who were removed from power when they turned twenty.

The last one was the "Tokugawa Shogunate", officially established by Ieyasu Tokugawa in 1603 and culminated in 1868, after the resignation of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, when Emperor Meiji resumed his role as protagonist in the country's political life and the figure of the Shogun was abolished.
