I've wanted to chase storms for longer than I can recall. I have no memory of when it was that I officially “decided” I wanted to be a storm chaser. It’s just always been a part of my very identity as a person. After two decades of planning, those dreams came to a head on this muggy May afternoon, when a strong tornado came down less than 100 yards from me in a rural field. Had the friend who was driving not noticed an upcoming eastbound road, we would have been overtaken. Instead, as he hit the gas flying eastbound, the vortex obliterated a house beside us before crossing the road behind us. I exited the truck and turned toward the behemoth to my west, firing as many frames as I could. What you're looking at is a token of one of my most precious experiences. In these images, my lifelong hopes and dreams are realized. This photo shortlisted me for Weather Photographer of the Year in 2020. It is my pride and joy.
