Wāhi Ngaro; Hidden Realm
Beneath the ocean's surface, I watched in wonder as a Thresher shark moved with elegance above me. Its sleek silhouette cutting through the water, symbolising strength and beauty. In that instant, I felt deeply connected to the endless expanse of the sea.
Discovering a newfound admiration for the ocean through an open water course, I journeyed to the Philippines to delve deeper into the world of diving and build my confidence. During this time, Malapascua unexpectedly became my sanctuary amidst the global shutdown. Though Thresher sharks typically reside at depths of up to 550 metres, Monad Shoal, where they are cleaned by wrasse, lays between 30 and 40 metres. As others left, I stayed, witnessing the sharks' increasing confidence in the serene waters. Through early mornings and silent dives, I developed a deep appreciation for these magnificent creatures; jewels hidden in the depths and shadows.
