WHANG OD OGGAY
is the world's oldest traditional tattoo artist (105 as of 2022) and the Last Mambabatok of original ritual or cultural context from her generation. She belongs in the fearsome headhunting tribe called the Butbut Tribe.
This was the last shoot before leaving her village wrapping up the 3 days-2 nights documentation of her daily life she permitted me back in 2015.
Months later, the public clamor grew to make her a National Artist in the country. The portraits were featured on World Photography Day in Rappler, CNN Philippines, HitRecord and by Hollywood actor Joshua Gordon Levitt.
Whang Od was eventually featured in major platforms from around the world including National Geographic, History Channel and more.
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts conferred on Whang Od the prestigious Dangal ng Haraya Award in 2018
