A beautiful portrait of Chris while Soundgarden was rehearsing for the upcoming Superunknown tour. I don’t even recall how this came together (their manager and Chris’ ex-wife Susan Silver I would imagine), but it was a casual afternoon of being a fly on the wall. There was also a posed group session for something, which the band begrudgingly went along with (and always my least favorite part too). Once that was out of the way, the band proceeded to rock out in the studio.
I set up couple of simple Tota-Lights in corners for some added drama to the existing dim studio lighting, and used a Nikon with a 135mm f/2 lens and TMAX 3200 high speed film, most likely ‘pushed’ to 6400, which had a larger grain structure to it but allowed one to shoot with faster shutter speeds and smaller apertures. Chris, Kim, and Ben all loved to smoke, thereby nicely diffusing the light. Cornell was just so beautiful it was almost impossible to take poor photograph of him. Gone but not forgotten.
