MARINES represents a “reason” - an aberration in the usual abuse of authority. It features a man in a Marine’s jacket overseeing a police riot. While there is no way to confirm if this person is on active duty, the image represents the crossover of the military into city policing. The source photograph was taken in Brooklyn on May 29th while on assignment for a national magazine. While it decided not to publish due to sensitive content, the source image went on to be used as evidence in cases about police misconduct and constitutional obstruction.

Reason and Answer was shot in New York City at the protests for George Floyd on May 29, 2020 and the autonomous action for Walter Wallace on October 28, 2020. Printed as a risograph without black ink (before being digitized in 2021), the image is destabilized and cannot be used as evidence.
