Milkyway core rising behind Mt.Ngauruhoe aka Mt.Doom of the LOTR movie. Mt. Ngauruhoe sits in the middle of Tongariro complex of volcanic cones and craters which were formed by eruptions from at least 12 vents over more than 275,000 years. Erosion during the last Ice Age has worn away what was once a substantial mountain into the world famous hiking destination that it is today. Tongariro Alpine crossing is the best one day hike anybody can do in New Zealand.I have been trying to create this image since 2014, but after several attempts battling the typical mountain behaviour in different years, I was lucky to get this image in June 2016.
